📖 Crypto Dictionary (KYT, VASP, DeFi & More)

New to the jargon? Plain-English definitions for terms used across this directory—from AML and KYT to liquid staking, MEV, L2s, and SPL.

Avg. Liquidity

Avg. Liquidity is the average liquidity score for an asset across its main trading pairs and exchanges.

  • Higher values usually mean deeper order books and lower slippage for normal-sized trades.
  • Lower values usually mean thinner order books and higher price impact when buying or selling.
Use this metric to estimate how easily you can enter or exit a position without significantly moving price.

Markets (Pairs)

Markets is the number of trading pairs listed for a coin/token across supported exchanges on CoinMarketCap.

For example, BTC/USDT, BTC/USD, and BTC/EUR are three separate markets.

More markets often indicate broader exchange support, but they do not always mean strong liquidity on every pair.

Spot Exchange

A Spot Exchange is where you buy or sell assets for "immediate" delivery. You own the actual asset once the trade is completed.

  • Ownership: You own the underlying asset (e.g., you can move your BTC to a hardware wallet).
  • Leverage: Usually none, or very limited (via margin trading).
  • Risk: Limited to the asset's price dropping to zero. You cannot be "liquidated" unless you are using borrowed funds.
  • Example: Buying $1,000 worth of Bitcoin and holding it.

Derivatives Exchange

A Derivatives Exchange deals with financial contracts that "derive" their value from an underlying asset. You are trading the price movement, not the asset itself.

  • Ownership: You do not own the asset; you own a contract (Futures, Options, or Perpetuals).
  • Leverage: High leverage is common (e.g., 10x, 50x, or 100x), allowing you to trade with more money than you have.
  • Shorting: It is much easier to bet on the price going down.
  • Risk: High. If the price moves against you, your position can be "liquidated" (wiped out).

DEX (Spot)

A Decentralized Exchange (DEX) for spot trading uses smart contracts to allow users to trade directly from their own wallets without a middleman.

  • Control: Non-custodial. You keep your private keys ("Not your keys, not your coins").
  • Mechanism: Usually uses Automated Market Makers (AMM) like liquidity pools instead of a traditional order book.
  • Privacy: No KYC (Know Your Customer) is typically required.
  • Examples: Uniswap (Ethereum), PancakeSwap (BSC), or STON.fi (TON).

KYT

KYT (Know Your Transaction) is continuous screening of crypto transfers and wallet activity for illicit or high-risk patterns.

  • Used by exchanges, VASPs, and compliance teams alongside KYC.
  • Flags links to sanctions, mixers, darknet markets, scams, and other abuse.
  • Examples: Chainalysis KYT, Elliptic screening, TRM transaction monitoring.

VASP

A VASP (Virtual Asset Service Provider) is a business that exchanges, transfers, or custodially holds virtual assets for customers.

  • Typically includes centralized exchanges, custodians, brokers, and some wallet providers.
  • Subject to AML/CFT rules such as KYC, KYT, and Travel Rule obligations in many jurisdictions.
  • Examples: Binance, Coinbase, Kraken (as licensed/regulated entities in applicable markets).

dApp

A dApp (decentralized application) runs on a blockchain via smart contracts instead of a single company server.

  • Users usually connect a wallet to interact; logic and state live on-chain.
  • Frontends may still be hosted normally, while settlement and permissions are on-chain.
  • Examples: Uniswap, Aave, OpenSea, Polymarket.

RPC

RPC (Remote Procedure Call) is how wallets, dApps, and tools talk to a blockchain node to read data and submit transactions.

  • Providers expose HTTP/WebSocket endpoints per network (e.g., Ethereum mainnet, Base, Solana).
  • Apps query balances, blocks, logs, and broadcast signed txs through these endpoints.
  • Examples: Alchemy, QuickNode, Infura, public chain RPCs.

IPFS

IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) is a peer-to-peer content-addressed storage network often used for NFT metadata and decentralized file hosting.

  • Content is identified by a hash (CID), not a single server URL.
  • Gateways and pinning services make content reliably retrievable.
  • Examples: NFT media/metadata, Infura IPFS, Pinata, public IPFS gateways.

Yield Trading

Yield trading lets users buy, sell, or speculate on future yield from staking, lending, or other cash-flow-generating assets—often by splitting principal and yield.

  • Separates fixed vs. floating yield exposure without always holding the underlying position.
  • Common in DeFi interest-rate and points/yield markets.
  • Examples: Pendle and similar yield-tokenization protocols.

Liquid Staking

Liquid staking lets you stake tokens for network rewards while receiving a liquid receipt token you can trade, lend, or use in DeFi.

  • Avoids locking capital solely in native staking.
  • Receipt tokens (LSTs) represent staked principal plus accruing rewards.
  • Examples: Lido (stETH), Jito (jitoSOL).

Restaking

Restaking reuses already staked assets (or liquid staking tokens) to secure additional services or networks for extra yield—and extra slashing risk.

  • Extends economic security beyond the base chain’s consensus.
  • Higher rewards typically mean more complex risk surface.
  • Examples: EigenLayer / EigenCloud and related AVS ecosystems.

Lending

Lending in DeFi is supplying crypto to a protocol so others can borrow it, usually against collateral, in exchange for interest.

  • Suppliers earn yield; borrowers pay interest and risk liquidation if collateral falls.
  • Rates are often algorithmic based on utilization.
  • Examples: Aave, Morpho, Spark, Maple.

MEV

MEV (Maximal Extractable Value) is profit captured by reordering, inserting, or censoring transactions within a block beyond standard block rewards and gas fees.

  • Includes arbitrage, sandwiching, liquidations, and priority auctions.
  • Affects user execution quality and validator/searcher economics.
  • Examples: Flashbots, Jito (Solana), sandwich and backrun strategies.

Multisig

A Multisig (multi-signature) wallet requires multiple approved signatures before funds can move or a transaction can execute.

  • Common pattern: M-of-N (e.g., 2-of-3 or 3-of-5).
  • Used for treasuries, DAOs, teams, and shared custody to reduce single-key risk.
  • Examples: Safe{Wallet} (formerly Gnosis Safe).

Hot Wallet

A Hot Wallet is a wallet whose keys are stored on an internet-connected device (browser extension, mobile, or desktop app).

  • Convenient for daily spending, trading, and dApp use.
  • Higher exposure to malware, phishing, and remote compromise than cold storage.
  • Examples: MetaMask, Phantom, Trust Wallet, Rabby.

Cold Wallet

A Cold Wallet keeps private keys offline—typically on a hardware device or air-gapped setup—so signing happens without exposing keys to the internet.

  • Best for long-term storage and large balances.
  • Often paired with a hot wallet or software app for viewing and transaction prep.
  • Examples: Ledger, Trezor, and other hardware / air-gapped setups.

EVMs

EVMs (Ethereum Virtual Machine–compatible chains) run Ethereum-style smart contracts and tooling with little or no code change.

  • Share Solidity/Vyper contracts, MetaMask-style wallets, and familiar explorer UX.
  • Differ mainly in fees, speed, security model, and bridging.
  • Examples: Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Avalanche C-Chain.

L2s

L2s (Layer 2s) are scaling networks that process transactions off the base Layer 1 (usually Ethereum) and settle or prove results back to L1 for security and finality.

  • Lower fees and higher throughput than L1 for most user activity.
  • Common designs: optimistic rollups and ZK rollups.
  • Examples: Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, zkSync, Linea.

SPL

SPL (Solana Program Library) is Solana’s standard token and program toolkit—most commonly referring to SPL tokens (Solana’s fungible/NFT token standards).

  • Analogous to ERC-20/ERC-721 on Ethereum, but native to Solana’s account model.
  • Used for mints, transfers, ATAs (associated token accounts), and many DeFi/NFT apps.
  • Examples: USDC on Solana, most Solana memecoins and NFT collections.

AML

AML (Anti-Money Laundering) is the set of laws, controls, and processes used to detect and prevent laundering of illicit funds—including in crypto.

  • Typically pairs with KYC (identity), KYT (transaction monitoring), sanctions screening, and suspicious-activity reporting.
  • Required for many VASPs and relevant to investigators and compliance teams.
  • Examples: wallet screening, Travel Rule compliance, Chainalysis / Elliptic / TRM workflows.
